Appeal for the Union of Federalists
Uniting Federalists to respond to global challenges
The world is confronted with the resurrection of nationalism, which returns in new shapes, that of sovereignism and populism, the lack of mutual confidence between the protagonists of world politics, which generates arms race, the covid-19 pandemics together with other global challenges such as climate change, the shift of decision making power from states to multinational finance and corporations, increasing economic and social inequalities, the international organized crime and terrorism, migrations, deforestation, overpopulation, depletion of natural resources, environmental catastrophes and so on.
In spite of the difficulties that both the UEF and the WFM are facing, it seems to us that a new favourable trend has started in world politics after the defeat of sovereignism in the European and American elections in 2019 and 2020 and the proposals advanced by the G20 for a global minimum corporate tax and an allocation of IMF Special Drawing Rights (SDR), which are provisions similar to the EU Recovery Plan conceived to fight the pandemic, to finance the digital and environmental transition and to assign to the low income countries and first of all the African Union a conspicuous amount of resources.
The global dimension of the above-mentioned challenges suggests that the time is ripe to overcome the division of federalists, which dates back to their foundation. However, we do not start from point zero, as the UEF is associated member of WFM. If European and World federalists combat together those challenges, their commitment will be more effective. United we will be stronger.
As the UEF and WFM Congresses are approaching, we would like to transmit this message in order to create a contact group with the following tasks:
- disseminating the watchword “United we will be stronger”;
- starting a debate on a common strategy of European and World federalists to be proposed to their respective legitimate organs.
Those who agree to start this discussion are invited to reply to: info@europainmovimento.eu
